Why did you choose to teach at Morgan Park Academy?
What attracted me to MPA was the appreciation of language learning and introducing its students to different cultures and languages. Morgan Park Academy requires students to study language and think globally. I have rarely experienced a school with such emphasis on language learning and global learning.
What is the most important life lesson you want students to learn in your class?
Keep trying — never give up!
What experiences or people had the most influence on you?
My seventh and eighth-grade Spanish teacher, Mrs. Fredrickson, introduced me to the Spanish language as well as other cultures and languages. I credit her to helping me learn my basic vocabulary and grammar.
How do you inspire a student who has a hard time learning your subject?
I am an encourager, letting students know that communication is a big key to language learning and the effort they put into the course will reveal itself at the end. Students take Spanish for different reasons and it’s important to understand that there are different levels of learning going on with each student. I encourage them to use what they have learned and build on it daily with the resources provided to them inside and outside the classroom. I involve myself into each student’s learning process and style as much as possible. I have a responsibility as an instructor to give constructive, meaningful feedback that will inspire them to keep trying and never give up.
