How do you inspire students to enjoy learning?
I believe that young students learn best when they are having fun. I love to add games to my lessons. Games increase enthusiasm, smiles and laughter.
What are your favorite moments with a student?
My favorite moments are when I shock-and-awe them with history facts or scientific facts about our planet. What I mean is when I show them something they have never seen before, like a video of an erupting volcano, an animal from another country, or a shortcut in math. Sometimes it is in the way I present it or just the information itself. Recently in social studies, I did a lesson with Google Earth and it was 100% “shock and awe.” Their eyes were huge, mouths wide open, and tons of wows. It really was incredible.
What is the most important lesson you want students to learn in your class?
Learning is a lifelong process and should be enjoyed.
How do you keep current with the subject areas you cover?
I enjoy online classes that highlight new teaching tools, mostly technology driven. As generations change, teaching practices should adapt with these changes. I feel it is important to have a bank of current teaching tools to use as students’ needs require them.
