Q&A

How do you inspire students to enjoy learning?

Chinese is one of the easiest languages to learn to speak. The most difficult part is learning to write. The writing system however uses far fewer words than other languages. Each word is its own unique picture and behind each picture is an origin story. I like to use the stories behind each character to inspire my students to learn Chinese.

What motivated you to become a teacher?

Because both of my parents were teachers, I always wanted to become one myself. I became a Chinese language teacher the day I graduated from school. When I was in China, I taught Mandarin to international students in Chinese universities. Since immigrating to the United States, I’ve taught Chinese to American students of all ages, from Pre-K to college. Being a teacher has been my lifelong calling.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

Interacting with students in Chinese and seeing American students speak the language gives me a sense of accomplishment.
