For the third time in seven years, a member of the Morgan Park Academy faculty has received the University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award for excellence in teaching and mentorship. Lynsey Panek, who teaches high school chemistry and human anatomy, was recognized for this national award after being nominated by Charles Hendon, a University of Chicago freshman who graduated from MPA last spring. Panek is in her fifth year as a member of the Morgan Park Academy faculty. “This is a well-deserved recognition for Lynsey,” Upper School principal Tom Drahozal said. “Lynsey has a passion for learning that is contagious for [...]

Examining Social Questions Through Statistical Analysis

2021-06-01T15:32:49-05:00

How does a good night's sleep affect your overall health? Is there a connection between income and religion? Are teenagers who have lost a parent more likely to use marijuana? Morgan Park Academy juniors and seniors in AP Statistics used programming and statistical analysis to examine challenging social questions like these in an extensive research project. Students used the industry-leading SAS software suite to dig into data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a nationally representative study that has followed more than 20,000 people from adolescence to adulthood over the past 25 years. “The study of statistics [...]

Radio/Podcasting Class Uses New Tech to Create Old-Fashioned Fun

2021-04-07T12:26:26-05:00

By Kyle Garmes The Beverly Review Morgan Park Academy (MPA) students are combining new-age technology with old-fashioned entertainment to provide senior citizens with smiles and laughter. As part of a radio/podcasting class, MPA students are teaming up with Make Grandma Smile, a Chicago therapy and technology organization, to create an old-fashioned radio show that will be sent to senior citizens around the city who are in assisted-living homes. Those seniors are also producing similar shows to be sent to MPA students. The final performances are scheduled to be completed by mid-April, and MPA sophomore Kaleb Bandele is looking forward to their [...]

How Does a Zombie Virus Attack the Brain?

2021-02-25T14:47:19-06:00

Faced with scattered reports of a zombie apocalypse, Upper School students in psychology class gathered and presented research on the effects the mysterious infection has on the human nervous system, the endocrine system, and the brain. Students sought to answer: - What areas of the body (nervous, endocrine, and brain) does the zombie virus affect? - How do the diseased areas of the brain influence the behavior of infected individuals? - What instruments would you use to diagnose the infected areas of the brain? - How can we treat the zombies? Psychology is an Upper School elective course that introduces students [...]

Calculating Projectile Motion in Algebra 2

2020-11-19T12:04:34-06:00

Upper School students in Algebra 2 are solving real-world problems with methods they've learned for solving quadratic functions, including a particular favorite category: projectile motion problems. These problems focus on dropping, kicking, throwing, or launching items and understanding their position in relation to principles of physics. Students are able to utilize initial velocity and initial position to write equations to determine time and position of objects. One of their favorite problems involved the (purely hypothetical!) example of two students throwing their math textbooks off the roof. Given the initial upward velocities of both items, students had to determine which of the [...]
