2021-04-07T12:26:26-05:00

By Kyle Garmes The Beverly Review Morgan Park Academy (MPA) students are combining new-age technology with old-fashioned entertainment to provide senior citizens with smiles and laughter. As part of a radio/podcasting class, MPA students are teaming up with Make Grandma Smile, a Chicago therapy and technology organization, to create an old-fashioned radio show that will be sent to senior citizens around the city who are in assisted-living homes. Those seniors are also producing similar shows to be sent to MPA students. The final performances are scheduled to be completed by mid-April, and MPA sophomore Kaleb Bandele is looking forward to their [...]

MPA students are keeping alive our tradition of service this semester, even as we can’t travel off campus for large projects. One recent example came from Delia and Cormac, who gathered donations from their friends and classmates to help our neighbors at the Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry. Thank you to all who contributed. Nice work, Warriors!

Alumni Help State Acquire Millions of PPE Masks

2020-04-09T17:45:56-05:00

Keeping alive the MPA tradition of service, alumni Marc Dabaco '03 and Jason Salerno '06 worked with their family's importing company to facilitate the state's acquisition of millions of KN95 respirator masks and surgical masks and bring them from China for local use. As managing partners at JMI Sales Group, the two cousins work with their uncle, John Mikulski, to sell and import products and equipment for hardware stores, farming and ranching, convenience stores, industrial use, and more. That expertise came in handy when the State of Illinois needed help securing, fulfilling, and shipping a personal protective equipment (PPE) order from [...]

Service: Continuing an MPA Tradition

2020-02-10T14:09:23-06:00

Service has long been at the core of the student experience at Morgan Park Academy. At one time that meant preparing for military service; now its centrality is evident in the school’s mission statement, which affirms a commitment to “preparing the global leaders of tomorrow to make a positive difference in the world.” That takes various forms as students progress from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, but the core focus stays consistent. “Service and teaching students empathy for others is what positions them to make a positive difference in the world,” Head of School Mercedes Z. Sheppard said. “You have to care, [...]

Service Living in the Lower School

2019-05-23T14:58:57-05:00

Known as “the MPA Way,” the maxim “Be kind and do your best” has been a way of life in the Lower School for decades. So many aspects of our curriculum emphasize how each of us is special and can make a positive difference in the world. Lower School teachers try to instill a philanthropic spirit in the Academy’s youngest learners. Students quickly see how easy it is to spread kindness and begin living for others. So much so that service learning becomes service living. In conjunction with our all-school service day on May 17, teachers from preschool through fifth grade [...]
