Morgan Park Academy’s Academic Challenge team continued its 30-year history of top-level success with a third-place finish at the 2021 state finals, including four individual medals in math and engineering graphics. Competing in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math, and physics, 14 MPA students combined for 372.6 points, a total that measured up against not only their peers in the unboundaried Division 300, but many larger schools. This is the team’s highest finish since winning the 2012 state championship, as well as the fourth straight year and fifth time in seven years with at least one top-5 individual state [...]

Math Team Shines at State Finals

2021-03-31T15:11:49-05:00

Morgan Park Academy's math team reestablished its place among the top teams in the state, closing out a condensed 2021 season by placing third in the region and 13th in the state in Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) testing in March 2021. After posting high scores at the American Mathematics Competitions, MPA nearly duplicated its program-best, 10th-place state finish at ICTM two years ago with a strong team that earned a host of regional and state awards in Division 1A competition against 60 similarly sized schools. Coached by math teacher Diane Nead, the team is composed of seniors Emmett [...]

Calculating Projectile Motion in Algebra 2

2020-11-19T12:04:34-06:00

Upper School students in Algebra 2 are solving real-world problems with methods they've learned for solving quadratic functions, including a particular favorite category: projectile motion problems. These problems focus on dropping, kicking, throwing, or launching items and understanding their position in relation to principles of physics. Students are able to utilize initial velocity and initial position to write equations to determine time and position of objects. One of their favorite problems involved the (purely hypothetical!) example of two students throwing their math textbooks off the roof. Given the initial upward velocities of both items, students had to determine which of the [...]

The Thrall Family Makerspace opens up a world of hands-on imagination, design, and exploration for students and teachers. The lower level of Hansen Hall has seen many changes over the decades, but the newest renovations might be the most exciting yet. Thanks to a $150,000 contribution from the family of Jerome Thrall ’44, the entire floor has been remodeled to create a makerspace for Morgan Park Academy students and teachers, opening up a series of interconnected spaces designed for imaginative, collaborative, and hands-on learning, building, and exploration. Opened in Fall 2018, the Thrall Family Makerspace contains resources and space for computers [...]

Despite a tournament reorganization that kept our Academic Challenge team from competing as a group at the virtual state finals, we are proud that sophomore Merlin Mo nabbed two individual medals to continue MPA’s 25-year history of success in this math, science, and engineering competition. Merlin placed fourth in physics and fourth in engineering graphics after being one of five MPA students to win medals at last year’s state finals. The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created by a team of academic experts and previously administered by the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) program in the [...]
