Comeback Win Has Volleyball Ready for Regionals

By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Oriella Ortiz stepped to the service line late in the first set on Oct. 13 knowing her Morgan Park Academy (MPA) teammates needed a boost. Junior Trio Leads Girls Volleyball

By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Preparing for the fall volleyball season, Olivia Fitch knew she needed to fulfill a more prominent leadership role for the MPA volleyball team. She won’t be alone. She’ll have plenty of help from two other juniors, libero Oriella Ortiz and setter Maya Adams. The trio has played together since fifth grade at the lower school at MPA, then the middle school team and finally the junior-varsity and varsity teams at the upper school. “We’re all pretty close as friends,” Fitch said. “We’ve been playing together so long that you know what they’re going to do [...]

Shortened Season Can’t Slow Girls Volleyball

By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Morgan Park Academy's 2019 girls volleyball team won a Class 1A regional title with a roster dominated by athletes from the underclasses, meaning they would have got a chance for a big 2020 season in normal circumstances. Instead, the pandemic wreaked havoc on the high school sports schedule, moving the season from fall to spring and not allowing for a state series. Coach Dan Cantone said the team isn’t dwelling on what could have been; instead, team members are appreciating the chance to practice and play, even for a short season. “You watch the girls’ [...]

Then, heading into her freshman year at Morgan Park Academy (MPA), the Beverly resident was told she had made the varsity squad. Now a month-plus into the season, Wallace is showing she belongs. Although host MPA lost to Heritage Christian 25-15, 25-14 on Sept. 27 in a nonconference match, Wallace finished with 4 kills and 3 aces for the Warriors. “I was pretty shocked,” Wallace said. “Coming in as a freshman, I didn’t think I was going [...]

Volleyball Falls Just Short in Regional Final

By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review With the season on the brink, Morgan Park Academy (MPA) senior Olivia Kamin stepped up in a big way. The outside hitter blasted a kill and ripped two aces from the service line, all helping the Warriors force a third set against Harlan with the regional title up for grabs. Unfortunately for host MPA, the momentum hit the skids. In the third set, Harlan mounted a huge comeback to win 25-18, 20-25, 25-22 on Oct. 26 in a Class 2A regional final. “It was hard, but honestly, it was an amazing feeling in the second [...]
