By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Oriella Ortiz stepped to the service line late in the first set on Oct. 13 knowing her Morgan Park Academy (MPA) teammates needed a boost. The junior libero rattled off an impressive 11-0 service run, including 7 aces, as host MPA rallied for the win on its way to a 25-17, 25-18 victory over Intrinsic Charter in a nonconference match. MPA will open the Class 1A state playoffs on Oct. [...]
By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Ayanna King qualified for the state tennis tournament in her freshman and sophomore seasons for Morgan Park Academy (MPA). Last season, her junior year, was heavily impacted by the pandemic as the Illinois High School Association allowed a sectional meet but not a state tournament. Now in her senior year, King wants to qualify again for state and then pile up some state tournament wins. “I want to make it to state and do 100 times better than I have done,” King said. “High school goes by so fast. I’m looking forward to having a [...]
By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Preparing for the fall volleyball season, Olivia Fitch knew she needed to fulfill a more prominent leadership role for the MPA volleyball team. She won’t be alone. She’ll have plenty of help from two other juniors, libero Oriella Ortiz and setter Maya Adams. The trio has played together since fifth grade at the lower school at MPA, then the middle school team and finally the junior-varsity and varsity teams at the upper school. “We’re all pretty close as friends,” Fitch said. “We’ve been playing together so long that you know what they’re going to do [...]
By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Stepping to the service line midway through the third set, Morgan Park Academy (MPA) senior Solana Delgado could sense the momentum slipping away. The Warriors were trailing by a point to neighborhood rival Morgan Park High School (MPHS) and needed a jolt of energy -- Delgado was there to deliver. Rattling off a 6-0 service run, including 5 straight aces, Delgado powered a MPA comeback leading to an exciting 25-16, 18-25, 25-16 nonconference victory on Aug. 26, 2021. >> CONTINUE READING AT THE BEVERLY REVIEW

By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Morgan Park Academy's 2019 girls volleyball team won a Class 1A regional title with a roster dominated by athletes from the underclasses, meaning they would have got a chance for a big 2020 season in normal circumstances. Instead, the pandemic wreaked havoc on the high school sports schedule, moving the season from fall to spring and not allowing for a state series. Coach Dan Cantone said the team isn’t dwelling on what could have been; instead, team members are appreciating the chance to practice and play, even for a short season. “You watch the girls’ [...]
