The Duchossois Award is Morgan Park Academy’s highest award for alumni, given annually in recognition of its namesake's lifetime achievements, outstanding professional success, and service to the Academy, his community, and society. Previous recipients are Duchossois, U.S. Ambassador Al Hoffman Jr. '52, Spencer Stuart '40, Bill Hickey '71, Jim Mitchell '61, and Denny Cresap '52.

Duchossois and Hoffman presented Dr. Burd with the award.

A standout student and football player at both Morgan Park Military Academy and the United States Military Academy, Dr. Burd served as an intelligence officer from 1956-60 with the Thirteenth Air Force, focusing on Southeast Asia.

After his military service, he earned both a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in political science at the University of Chicago and was a member of the founding faculty when the University of Maryland, Baltimore County was established in 1966. He taught at UMBC for 34 years, chairing the Department of Political Science and directing the International Studies Center.

Since 1980, Dr. Burd has been the president of the Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs, a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to citizen education in foreign affairs. Through lectures, seminars, discussions and studies, the council brings many of the world's leading authorities of foreign affairs to address members and guests and addresses several audiences: established and developing leadership, international professionals, the attentive citizenry, youth, and not-yet attentive public.

Dr. Burd and his wife, Patrice, also have been dedicated supporters of Morgan Park Academy, standing as members of the Maroon and Ivy Society for their generosity since 2000. The Pauline Kroll Burd Endowed Scholarship, established in memory of his mother, provides recognition and tuition assistance for deserving Upper School students.
