Second-graders began the school year by building on their summer reading of Saadia Faruqi’s Meet Yasmin, a book about a second-grader with a big imagination, a growth mindset, and a willingness to explore.
The children loved learning about Yasmin’s Pakistani American culture. Students worked on sequencing and story mapping. Yasmin created a map and used it to solve a problem in the book; our students also created their own maps. Yasmin is a builder, so second-graders used various building materials to complete a STEM activity in class.
The children enjoyed the book so much that many of them purchased the sequels or checked them out from the library. They can’t wait to see what else Yasmin has been up to!
