Morgan Park Academy’s math team shined at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) state finals on May 5, capturing a third-place individual medal and three top-10 finishes in team events.

Coached by Upper School math teachers James Goehmann and Catie McAlister, the team is comprised of a dozen Upper School students: seniors Abby Herman, Grace Lei, and Adam Wu; juniors Murphy Chen, Bryan Coronado, Ethan Deng, Tony Tang, and Will Wei; sophomore Luming Zhao; and freshmen Sabrina Eng, Shuji Lu, and Wayne Zhao.

All 12 students advanced based on their performance at the regional championships, but the state finals at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign put them against teams twice their size or larger.

Nonetheless, the Warriors finished second in Division 1A in the Algebra 2 team event, with Tony placing third among individuals. They took sixth place in the calculator team event and eighth in the junior-senior eight-person competition.

Congratulations, all!
