Morgan Park Academy’s math team shined at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) regional competition, bringing home an armful of ribbons and medals home from Saint Xavier University on Feb. 24, 2018.

Competing in algebra 1, algebra 2, pre-calculus, and calculus, as well as pairs and team events, were seniors Abby Herman, Grace Lei, and Adam Wu; juniors Murphy Chen, Bryan Coronado, Ethan Deng, Tony Tang, and Will Wei; sophomore Luming Zhao; and freshmen Sabrina Eng, Shuji Lu, and Wayne Zhang.

Among individuals, Will Wei and Ethan Deng finished first and second, respectively, in the Algebra 2 competition, while Shuji Lu tied for second in Algebra 1.

MPA also finished first in four team competitions as well:

  • junior-senior eight-person team (Murphy, Ethan, Tony, Will, Bryan, Abby, Grace, Adam)
  • junior-senior two-person team (Grace, Tony)
  • calculator team (Luming, Ethan, Will, Adam)
  • Algebra 2 team (Luming, Ethan, Tony, Will, Bryan)

MPA’s eight-person, junior-senior team outscored opponents from not only from Division 1A but also larger schools from Division 2A.

Coached by Upper School math teachers James Goehmann and Catie McAlister, the team projects to send 10 students to the state finals on May 5.

Congratulations, all!
