In his 24 years coaching the Morgan Park Academy (MPA) girls basketball team, Tom Drahozal has turned the Warriors into consistent winners.
He’s piled up 340 wins, six regional titles and has led the way to 14 seasons of 15 victories or more.
However, the 2017-18 team was a record-setting squad, which made host MPA’s 53-45 defeat against Serena on Feb. 8 in its Class 1A regional final that much tougher to handle.
“We’ve had a good solid team before, but as far as cohesiveness, this is probably the most cohesive team we’ve ever had,” Drahozal said. “That’s what makes tonight tough. It hits harder. This is a special group, a special team, so it hurts.”
Senior guard Isis Rodriguez finished her sterling high school career with 16 points in the game, setting a single-season mark for points with 569. She overtook 1993 MPA grad Kate Kozacik Galley’s record of 556 with a hard drive to the hoop in the third quarter.
Sophomore Amaya McLachlan (13 points, 9 rebounds), senior Abby Herman (12 points, 6 rebounds) and sophomores Samaria Harris (4 points) and Kaitlyn Mullings (14 rebounds) all chipped in for the Warriors.
