Putting History on Trial

Morgan Park Academy freshmen used the mock trial format to examine world history from all sides this semester, preparing and conducting opening statements, direct examinations, and closing arguments in trials of Socrates and Galileo. Socrates' trial in October was the culmination of a unit on the ancient world in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and India. In December, students argued the charges made by the Catholic Church against Galileo, capping an academic quarter in which they explored the evolution of world religions and the role of religion in history, with a focus on the scientific revolution. In both cases, students took on the [...]

Family Interviews as Living History

How did you spend Thanksgiving with your family? Morgan Park Academy freshmen embraced the holiday as an opportunity to explore their place in history by interviewing parents, grandparents, and other family members about their life experiences. Students uploaded their audio recordings to share with StoryCorps, a non-profit organization with a mission “to record, preserve, and share the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs.” The project was part of the Great Thanksgiving Listen, which StoryCorps describes as "a national movement that empowers young people—and people of all ages—to create an oral history of the contemporary United States by recording an [...]

Book Covers MPA Football History

By Kyle Garmes The Beverly Review With his father being the school’s football coach, Joe Ziemba grew up on the campus of Morgan Park Military Academy, now known as Morgan Park Academy (MPA). As a child in the 1950s, Joe was on the practice field, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the team. As an adult, Ziemba has become a respected sportswriter and author, and his latest book focuses on those days at the academy. Ziemba published “Cadets, Cannons and Legends: The Football History of Morgan Park Military Academy” this year, and he visited the Ridge Historical Society (RHS) on Dec. 7 [...]

Snapshot: Woodworking in AP Physics

AP Physics students designed and built 15 stools for our new Makerspace, using the woodworking tools in our new Makerspace — because why buy furniture when you can make it? Working in two groups of three, the six-person class set about to make a pair of prototype stools, researching to determine the best angles for the legs and how to use dowels, screws, and cross-center pieces to provide support. With the prototypes completed, the class discussed the pros and cons of each design and developed a plan for construction of the remaining stools. Currently in the sanding and finishing stage, the full [...]

Peer Learning in Eighth-Grade History

Peer-to-peer learning happens every day at Morgan Park Academy, whether that's faculty members sharing new instructional approaches or students helping each other master new material. One example is eighth-grade history class, where students are creating lessons about aspects of the U.S. Civil War that they will teach to their classmates. With some teacher guidance and extensive research, students work in teams to develop detailed and creatively free lesson plans. Groups are variously employing videos, quizzes and games, the Socratic method, an interactive map of 1860s America, and more. "With projects like this, students are able to take charge of the actual [...]

New Leader Steps Up for Girls Basketball

By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review After Isis Rodriguez, the program’s all-time leading scorer, graduated in the spring, the Morgan Park Academy (MPA) basketball team knew no player would be able to fill the void; it would have to be a team effort. However, through the early weeks of the season, senior Amaya McLachlan has embraced a huge role, averaging over 30 points for MPA. Helping take down Mooseheart on Nov. 29, McLachlan scored 28 points and added 7 rebounds and 5 steals as host MPA rolled to a 60-32 nonconference victory. “I knew I would have to play a bigger [...]
