MPA Celebrates 125th Anniversary of Nation’s First High School Basketball Game

As one of the oldest schools in Chicago, Morgan Park Academy is steeped in history, including a unique distinction as the first high school to participate in a basketball game. Now in 2018, the Academy celebrates the 125th anniversary of that historic first game, played on February 24, 1893, just fourteen months after James Naismith debuted the sport at Springfield (Mass.) College. Morgan Park Academy's basketball tradition continues to this day, with both the boys and girls varsity teams reaching the IHSA Class 1A regional finals this season. Historic Career Ends in Regional Final

By Tim O’Brien The Beverly Review Brent McKnight wasn’t sure what was in store for him after he transferred to Morgan Park Academy (MPA) for his junior and senior seasons. He wanted to make the most of the experience after spending his first two seasons at Bishop Noll Institute in Indiana, and he did. Although McKnight’s impressive two-year run with the Warriors ended as MPA lost 69-60 to No. 2-seed Fenger on Feb. 23 in the Class 1A St. Francis de Sales regional championship, he was still upbeat. “I had great teammates. He’s piled up 340 wins, six regional titles and has led the way to 14 seasons of 15 victories or more. However, the 2017-18 team was a record-setting squad, which made host MPA’s 53-45 defeat against Serena on Feb. 8 in its Class 1A regional final that much tougher to handle. “We’ve had a good solid team before, but as far as cohesiveness, this is probably the most cohesive team we’ve ever had,” [...]

WYSE Team Wins Big at Regionals

Morgan Park Academy's WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) team began its postseason push with a strong performance at regionals, finishing third among schools with 1,500 or fewer students at the University of St. Francis on Feb. 2. Competing in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math, and physics, MPA not only easily won Division 300 against schools its own size but finished third when measured against high schools with 10 times more students. Teaming up to advance to next month's sectional round were seniors Amy Hu, Grace Lei, Leo Luo, Katarina Stanley, Hyuna Wei, Adam Wu, and Ian [...]
