Morgan Park Academy’s Upper School math team closed its first season of Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition with a strong showing at the state finals, placing sixth in algebra 2 and 17th in pre-calculus among more than 50 Division 1A schools.
Fielding a smaller team than most schools, MPA competed in only three of the 13 subjects contested May 6 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, but sophomores Murphy Chen, Bryan Coronado, Tony Tang, Will Wei, and William Zhang; juniors Lisa Chen, Amy Hu, Grace Lei, and Katarina Stanley; and seniors Akin Coffy and Matthew Hu punched above their weight to finish 24th in the team standings.
The team’s success in algebra 2 was led by Tony, who tied for 11th among individuals. Will (t30th), William (t30th), Murphy (t49th), Lisa (t93rd), and Amy (t93rd) also each scored among the top 100 students.
Katarina (t23rd), Grace (t35th), and Matthew (t66th) led the way in pre-calculus.
Congratulations to our amazing mathletes and their dedicated coaches, Mr. Radulescu and Mr. Erzen!
