Ranked as one of the state’s top private schools this month by Niche.com, Morgan Park Academy received similar honors from Chicago magazine, selected as the No. 8 private high school in Chicago.
The magazine feature focused on Global Week, a cornerstone of the MPA global studies curriculum for all students and teachers from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12.
Infused into the curriculum throughout the school year, our study of language and culture, service to others, and environmental sustainability comes into sharpest focus for one week each March. Upper School and Middle School students and teachers share a broad range of learning experiences off campus, while our Lower School explores the world’s countries and cultures closer to home.
Last year’s Upper School experiences included trips to Japan, Iceland, Greece and Italy (pictured above), Germany, Yellowstone National Park, and Silicon Valley, California; and local explorations of 3D printing, filmmaking, and alternative sports.
Middle School students visited the Heifer Ranch in Arkansas to learn about global issues like poverty, hunger, and environmental degradation; visited Nature’s Classroom Institute in Wisconsin to immerse themselves in the natural environment for ecosystem exploration and study; and visited Washington, D.C., to understand the role of an American citizen in a global world.
“We want students to leave understanding that the South Side isn’t everything, that we are part of a larger world that we have a responsibility to,” Head of School Mercedes Z. Sheppard told Chicago magazine.
Earlier this month, the rankings and reviews website Niche.com ranked Morgan Park Academy among the top K-12 private schools and private high schools in Illinois. MPA received an overall grade of A+ and ranked in the top 10 percent of all private K-12 schools and private high schools in the nation. The school also ranked second in the state among most diverse private high schools.
