Spotlight on French

MPA is proud of our long-running French program. We currently introduce French in the preschool and continue French exploratory classes through 4th grade. In 5th grade, students can choose to take French full-time and study the language through the rest of their education at Morgan Park Academy. Our teachers, Mandala and Madame Haskins, love sharing their expertise and enthusiasm for French and Francophone culture with their students. In the early years, Madame teaches basic skills and vocabulary through dance, song, rhyme and movement. In our full-year program, Madame and Mandala add reading and writing skills, conversation and cultural competency. Additionally, our [...]

Technology Integration Defined

Technology Integration is a vital component of 21st century learning. In order to successfully integrate technology into the classroom, we must have an understanding of computer literacy. Computer literacy provides students with a background knowledge of basic hardware, software applications, internet, and problem solving skills. Students are learning key components of technology that will develop a skill set to promote lifelong learning. This skill set supports critical thinking, self-management, and social interaction, enabling the pursuit of further education and career goals. These skills are applied in the classrooms through effective communication, working collaboratively with peers, and through lessons that enable critical thinking. [...]

Young Adult Novelist Visits MPA

12/1/2016 MPA welcomed author Brian Wells on Nov. 21 for a special visit with students in grades 5-8, discussing the concept of the hero's journey and his new book, The League and the Lantern, which centers on a Chicago seventh-grader and his friends. Wells’ debut novel is the first book in a new adventure series for middle-school readers with unforgettable characters, smart humor, unexpected twists, and themes of courage and friendship. His discussion of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey was particularly apt for Mrs. Amberg’s sixth-graders, who are studying the literary concept in English class this year. Learn more about Wells and the book at his [...]

Why I Like Teaching in an ISACS School

Over the past two months, I have had the opportunity to experience three professional development opportunities: I presented at the Illinois Science Teachers Association (ISTA) in October, I went on an Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) accreditation team visit in late October, and I presented at the ISACS Annual Conference in early November. These three experiences reinforced the rewards of being a teacher at an ISACS school. At the ISTA conference, I gave a presentation titled “Back to BINGO for Bio Vocab” in which I shared some tools that I use to help students learn complex biology vocabulary. [...]
