Six members of Morgan Park Academy's WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) team will compete at the state finals after posting qualifying scores in sectional competition last month. Upper School students celebrated the Hindu festival of Holi on March 12 with a carnival of colors. The holiday includes a free-for-all with people of all ages playfully chasing and decorating each other with brightly colored, dry powders.
Each year, MPA sixth-graders participate in the popular and challenging Chicago Metro History Fair, researching and presenting their first long-form research project. The three-part project is an important lesson in learning to manage the process of large assignments. Besides creating their museum-like exhibits, students completed summary statements and annotated bibliographies. Students began in January by selecting a topic about Chicago history. They welcomed to campus Lisa Oppenheim, the director of the Chicago Metro History Fair. Dozens of Upper School students came together under the direction of seniors Amber Payne and Lauren Adams for our annual Dance for Life benefit show on March 6-7. The event raised nearly $4,000 for Dance for Life, a charitable organization whose mission is to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS care, education, and prevention, as well as other life-threatening diseases, while promoting the art of dance in Chicago. Morgan Park Academy students concluded Black History Month with a celebration of African-American and African history and culture from the 18th century to the modern day on Feb. 26. Through song and dance, poetry and presentations, MPA students of all ages honored heads of state, entrepreneurs, political activists, writers and poets, lawyers and judges, historians, athletes, and entertainers.
