Eighth-Grader Wins Geography Bee


Congratulations to eighth-grader Ben Perez, who held off seventh-grader Avery Schwartz and fifth-grader Lucy Nathwani to win our annual MPA geography bee!  Today's 10 contestants, all selected as the best in their respective grades, also included eighth-grader Robert Coats, seventh-grader Dillon Leonard, sixth-graders Langston Lewis and Christopher Skawiniak, fifth-grader Elauna Harris-Jones, and fourth-graders Riya Kapoor and Kole Sneed.

Birds of Prey Touch Down for Wildlife Presentation


Three birds of prey took center stage Friday in Baer Theater as Middle School students enjoyed a visit from Dawn Keller and her feathered friends from Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located in Barrington, Flint Creek Wildlife is a not-for-profit wildlife rehabilitation center dedicated to the care of injured and orphaned wildlife and to educating the public on wildlife and wildlife-related issues. They treat all species of wild birds, reptiles, and amphibians, and nearly all wild mammals. Dawn's presentation included a hawk, a falcon, and an owl, and questions and answers with dozens of excited students.

Giving Back on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service


"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" Recalling the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., MPA students and teachers devoted the Friday before his national holiday to an all-school day of service, volunteering their time and youthful energy to help children, senior citizens, and our less fortunate neighbors. Students in Grades 8-12: volunteered at Inspiration Corporation, a homeless empowerment and job-training facility; worked with students at Burr Oak Academy and Lawn Manor School; and helped organize storage areas here on campus. New Mosaic Murals Brighten Campus


Morgan Park Academy's campus is looking even more colorful these days with the completion of large new bricolage mosaic murals in Barker Hall and the Arts Center. Students of all ages designed and assembled the murals over the course of several months last year, with guidance from art teachers Pat Egan and Meg Simmerling Faeh and visiting artists from the Green Star Movement community art organization. Two colorful murals in Barker Hall brighten the hallway outside our first-floor Lower School classrooms, while the large mural in our Arts Center lobby features imagery representing art, music, and drama. Educating Parents on Cyberbullying in the Digital Age


MPA continued a three-part Parent Education Series on Jan. 15 with a talk about cyberbullying in our modern age of digital communication and social media by Carrie Goldman, the award-winning author of Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher, and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear. Carrie offered a realistic and engaging discussion about bullying and social conflict. Her presentation educated parents about distinguishing between normal social conflict and bullying, and how to respond to each accordingly. Building a Career in the Music Industry


Upper School students in Mr. Ellis' Foundations of Music classes got a behind-the-scenes look at a career in the music industry during a recent visit by guest speaker Ed Wimp '08. Ed is a musician, artist manager, and music business consultant who has worked on tour with R&B legends Earth, Wind & Fire and chart-topping rapper A$AP Rocky and was a panelist at the Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization's national conference last fall. Students learned about building a career and managing artists in the music industry, from marketing and personal branding to the various and ever-evolving ways that today's musicians can get paid for their work.
