After seven years of distinguished service to his alma mater, including the past four years as Board Chair, James J. Mitchell ’61 retired from Morgan Park Academy’s Board of Trustees this month. Rajeev Rathi ’84 assumes the role of Board Chair.
Mitchell has been an Academy trustee since 2007 and Board Chair since 2010. He enjoyed a 38-year career at the international financial services company Northern Trust, from which he retired as President of Worldwide Operations and Technology. He also is Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Roosevelt University and formerly was the Chair of the Board of Directors for Voices for Illinois Children.
“Jim Mitchell has been a tremendous leader for Morgan Park Academy and a tireless advocate for its students, faculty, and staff,” said Mercedes Z. Sheppard, the Academy’s Interim Head of School. “Throughout his tenure, he and the board have focused on strategic thinking to ensure a strong future for the Academy, championing the expansion of our global curriculum, renovating and renewing our facilities, and making it possible for us to continue to attract the best and brightest students and faculty.”
Since reconnecting with Morgan Park Academy a decade ago, Mitchell and his wife, Linda, have supported the school community in countless invaluable ways. Their generous financial support surpasses all but one donor in the school’s 141-year history.
“My fellow board members and I are extremely grateful to Jim for his leadership in a time of transition and reinvigoration,” Rathi said. “Through his many years as a student, alumnus, and trustee, he truly has made the Academy his life’s work, and we have benefited immensely from his stewardship. He has been a role model and mentor for so many of us. I’m honored to succeed him as Board Chair.”
The Board of Trustees unanimously elected Rathi chair at their May meeting. He has served as a trustee since 2008.
Rathi earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago in 1988, graduating with honors, and an MBA from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business. After working in the Investment Banking Department at J.P. Morgan and Lehman Brothers, he now is a private wealth advisor at UBS, serving as Senior Vice President of Investments.
Rathi and his wife, T.J., have three daughters at the Academy: Nina ’15, Savi ’17, and Sabrina ’18.
“Raj’s leadership skills, his personal style, and his deep experiences as a Morgan Park Academy trustee, parent, and alumnus uniquely qualify him to step into this role,” Sheppard said. “We are confident in his leadership and excited to continue building on the Academy’s legacy of excellence.”
