MPA kicked off a three-part Parent Education Series on Nov. 11 with a talk about teen substance abuse by Rachel Ridge, a licensed clinical social worker and certified alcohol and drug counselor with Rosecrance Health Network.
Rachel’s informative presentation educated parents on drug trends and usage by today’s teenagers. She offered many tips for talking with teenagers about drugs, and specifically marijuana, in an era of legalization. Rachel encouraged parents to open the conversation with their children and gave great advice on how to answer difficult questions.
More information and resources from Rachel and the Rosecrance team are available here.
Our speaker series, sponsored by the MPA student support team, will continue in the new year with two more events:
Award-winning author Carrie Goldman will discuss cyberbullying in the age of social media on Jan. 15 at 7:00 p.m.
Kari Misulonas, our Director of Student Support Services, will lead a discussion on Aaron Cooper’s book “I Just Want My Kid to Be Happy” on April 8 at 7:00 p.m.
Both events are free and open to the public. They will be held in our Arts Center at 2153 W. 111th Street.
