Global Citizen Program
Did you know that if the world were represented by a village of 100 people that:
- 15 would speak Chinese, Mandarin
- 7 English
- 6 Hindi
- 6 Spanish
- 5 Russian
- 4 Arabic
- 3 Bengali
- 3 Portuguese
The other people would speak Indonesian, Japanese, German, French, or some other language.
Becoming
aware of our role as citizens of the world is directly tied to
developing respect for cultures from around the globe. As we begin the
New Year, middle school students will kickoff a number of activities to
encourage global awareness. January opened with the Geography Bee
assembly on Friday, January 8, 2010. Immediately following the assembly
6th, 7th, and 8th graders were led by Geography Club students in an
entertaining and educational activity based upon the 100 People project
alluded to above – to foster understanding about our responsibility in
the world.
Throughout January, students will begin to
articulate past and present learning experiences to kickoff our
passport to Global Citizenship portfolio. During mid-January, students
will participate in friendly competition to help feed the world. We
will be using a site called
Free Rice, a
corporate-sponsored website that promotes and rewards learning by
donating grain to developing countries as students participate in
educational and cultural-related games. Subjects range from math to
geography, grammar, vocabulary and beyond. Activities such as Free Rice
and the Global Citizenship program will continue throughout the middle
school years. Check out the site for yourself. Anyone can play the
games and help feed the world by participating.
