Irish Dance for Beginners

Who: all ages
When: Two classes available: 10 a.m. or 11 a.m.
Where: Arts Center lower level
Cost: $120
Instructor: Shaylin McNamara, TCRG

Fall Session: Dance exercises focused on flexibility, core and leg strength, basic Irish dance moves: (hop 1,2,3's) 1st and 2nd step of the jig for those 5yrs and younger; older students usually learn 3 steps of the jig and move on to the reel.

Shoes: Plain black ballet slippers, or light Irish dance shoes. Irish dance shoes are not necessarily recommended for the first class because they are so expensive and children will grow out of them quickly. Students will not be allowed to dance in bare feet; they must at least wear fluffy socks if they have lost a shoe or two.

Attire: Comfortable clothes. Shorts or leggings are best. Jeans are not recommended.

About the Instructor: Former champion Irish, multiple Mid-America regional championships, North American championships, and represented the U.S. in the World competitions held in Ireland. The McNamara dancers compete throughout North America and perform at various events around Chicago. Our mission is to provide children the opportunity to learn Irish dance in a low pressure environment that focuses on the dancing and culture, not wigs and dresses. Our students improve coordination, grow in self-esteem, display good sportsmanship, meet new friends, and have fun!
