Project Week
Project Week began in 1999 as a desire by teachers to extend our curriculum, and to more fully realize our mission, by sharing learning experiences with students outside of the classroom. Every year we provide a range of project choices for students that include everything from cultural exchange and service to learning a new hobby. We encourage students to not only pursue their interests but also to expand their horizons and try new things while they are here at the Academy.
Project Week courses fall into four categories, according to their most salient educational objective:
- On Cultural Literacy trips, students expand their knowledge of other cultures, both inside and outside our borders.
- During Personal Commitments projects, students recognize the value of commitment to service beyond our school community, to team leadership, or to the pursuit of a new skill.
- Students who join a Sustainability course develop an understanding of our role as stewards of the planet.
- Finally, those who participate in a Curricular Connections experience deepen their understanding of course content through field experiences.
Past projects have included yoga, agricultural engineering, conservation in Chicago, Chicago architecture, Spanish and French language exchange, cultural trips to Asia, Europe, Africa and South America, and domestic trips to participate in Habitat for Humanity and College Tours in Los Angeles and New Orleans.
